Objection Against Word ‘Durbar’ in J&K

Jammu: An RTI activist has raised objections to the use of word  ‘Durbar’ for the public meetings  held by Chief Minister terming it the sign of monarchical mindset.
Activist Raman Sharma has appealed the Chief Minister, through the C.M Grievance Cell vide case no. 32034, to direct the State General Administration Department to issue a general circular cautioning all the ministers, officers and departments against the use of the word ‘Durbar’ to refer to their meetings with people.
Sharma stated, “We are a democratic country and state, the people of this country and particularly of Jammu and Kashmir State have negated the idea of monarchy some 60 years ago and chosen a democratic set up.” He regrets that even after more than six decades the shadow of monarchy exists in the mind-set of the ministers and bureaucrats.
Sharma believes that the word ‘Darbar’ is in vogue in Government offices and finds place in many press releases. The word according to him is seemingly used by the juniors to appease their officers and ministers. Right from public meetings of Cabinet Ministers to the rank of S.D.M, all officers use the word durbar to refer to their meetings. Sharma demands that the word ‘Darbar’ should be replaced with “Public Meeting”.
